Look around you and ask yourself if this is the quality of life you’d hoped for. If your answer was “No”, then I’d ask “Why not?”, followed by “What are you going to do about it?”
Most people, when asked what they’ve done to change their lives, say “It’s no use because…” and come out with one excuse after another.
But it doesn’t have to be like that.
1. Take Responsibility for the Quality of Your Life
This is your first step to get out of the rut. Stop making excuses and take responsibility for the quality of your life. You can change your life today. How do I know? Because I’ve done it and other people have done it.
There are always going to be obstacles, but none that you can’t get around or work through. All you need is the desire to change. Mark Twain once said, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” If your “desire to” is strong enough, you can achieve virtually anything you set your mind on.
2 Step Out in Faith
The second step out of the rut is to step out in faith. Step out trusting and believing that you can do it. As the Nike ad says, “Just do it.” There’s no time like the present so go for it.
You may not succeed first time, but you must keep trying. Success comes with persistence. You see it with kids taking school and college exams. They may not succeed first time but many persist until they do succeed. The ones that don’t persist, who walk away after their failure, regret it later on.
Remember the saying “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” Don’t worry about making a mistake. You’re human — mistakes are expected. Albert Einstein once said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”
If you don’t step out of your rut, what will your quality of life be like in a year? Five years? Ten years? You’re the only one who can change the quality of your life.
So take a chance and step out. As William Durant, the founder of General Motors, said, “Forget past mistakes. Forget failures. Forget everything except what you’re going to do now and do it.”
It’s your life. Live it.
Think of two ways you could change your life today.
What will your first steps be?
